In a double blind study conducted by scientists in Germany, placebo-controlled, it was found that artichoke extract was administered for 6 weeks significantly reduced total cholesterol by 18.5% and LDL cholesterol by 22.9%.
There were no side effects associated with the use of the artichoke. The manner in which the artichoke lowers cholesterol is not fully known. It should be possible to indirectly interact with the same protein that statins interact. Called HMG CoA reductase and has a very important role in the production of cholesterol.
